August 4 Tide Walk featuring Dr. Sherry Tamone - Photos!

UASAA hosted a Tide Walk on the beach at the Shrine of St. Therese last Saturday. The week before had been pretty rainy, but everyone was pleasantly surprised when it cleared up and stopped raining for the day of the event.

UAS marine biology professor Dr. Sherry Tamone and three of her students, Ben Derting, Eric Keller, and Sunflower (who was on exchange from Arkansas), led a group of intersted alumni and friends down the rocky beach to explore sea life in the tide pools and under the rocks.

Photos were taken and shared on the group's Facebook page.

Original Ziegler Oil Painting Donated to Egan Library, UAS

An original oil painting on canvas by one of Alaska’s most prolific artists, Eustace Paul Ziegler (1881-1969) has been donated to the University of Alaska Southeast Egan Library, Auke Lake Campus.  “The Ford,” is a large painting measuring 40 x 91½ inches with an appraised retail replacement value of $225,000.

The painting is on display in the Egan Library, conference room 210 and available for public viewing.  “We are thrilled to have an original Ziegler painting in the Egan Library.  His work is widely celebrated for beautifully reflecting early twentieth-century Alaskan frontier life,” said Elise Thomlinson, Interim Regional Director of Library Services, Egan Library

The painting was donated in memory of the pioneer spirit of Joe and Bessie Thomas and all their actions that helped pave the way for “present day” Juneau.  UAS Chancellor John Pugh said, “This is just one example of an amazing gift to the university.   Because of the family’s generosity, an Alaskan art treasure will be shared with the public and can be enjoyed by generations to come.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Lisa Murkowski announced Sonia Henrick (previously Christensen) will join her team Monday as the new Southeast Alaska Representative -- working out of Murkowski’s Ketchikan field office.

“Sonia’s knowledge base is that of a born-and-raised Ketchikan resident, combined with a high degree of policy expertise from her time working for Governor Parnell,” Murkowski said. “She has broad experience working on issues of statewide interest, as well as focused background in Southeast Alaska.”

Henrick comes to Sen. Murkowski’s office from Gov. Sean Parnell’s office, where she worked as Deputy Legislative Director since 2010. Before working for Gov. Parnell, she worked as an aide in the Alaska State Legislature for four years. Henrick is a graduate of the University of Alaska Anchorage with a degree in criminal justice and is pursuing a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Alaska Southeast.

"Marine mammal biologist Dr. Heidi Pearson is interested in learning more about how sea otter feeding habits may be changing the ecology of Sitka Sound. Pearson is a newly appointed Assistant Professor of Marine Biology at the University of Alaska Southeast Juneau. Pearson believes that by feeding on sea urchins, otters stabilize the kelp forests. Without otters to keep them in check, urchins act like spiny lumberjacks by gnawing through the stalks that connect kelp to the sea floor."

Bronze whale project gets funding push | Juneau Empire - Alaska's Capital City Online Newspaper

Lots of people have been asking about the whale tale castings around town.  This article will explain a little bit more.  UAS' involvement was the intermediate whale "Spike" currently displayed in front of the Juneau Arts & Humanities Council until the campus redesign is complete, when he will be brought out for display here.

When a sculptor does a large scale sculpture, as the final whale will be for the downtown project, they most often create an intermediate design before going large scale.  As part of the larger campaign, UAS raised the funds and purchased the smaller version, which will adorn our campus soon.

If you want more information about The Whale Project for the larger scultpure, you can visit these pages:

UAS fisheries program to offer class to Alaskan high school students

UAS fisheries program to offer class to Alaskan high school students

From Capital City Weekly

JUNEAU - A new course offered by the University of Alaska Southeast Fisheries Technology Program is aimed at introducing young men and women to fisheries careers. The class will expose students to the various fishing sectors in Alaska such as fisheries management, fish processing, marketing, commercial fishing, charter operations and salmon enhancement projects. Students will then visit fisheries professionals and tour a breadth of fishing operations and facilities in their home communities.

The goal of the class is to emphasize to Alaskan students how important fisheries are to the state's coastal communities. The class will highlight regional opportunities while letting students know what they may need to study to take advantage of these prospects.

The Fisheries Technology Program hopes to offer the class in interested communities, working with the local school districts and industry sectors. Mentors will be recruited to escort students on field trips, encourage students to ask questions and discuss opportunities amongst themselves. Students will be asked to create a blog so that students in different communities can learn from each other regarding various careers and opportunities statewide.

UAS Sitka Campus named among Sitka Green Business Award winners

From Capital City Weekly, Wednesday, April 11, 2012
SITKA - Last month, 24 Sitka businesses, agencies and not-for-profit groups were awarded the 2012 Sitka Green Business Award for their green business practices by the Sitka Global Warming Group and Sustainable Sitka (SGWG/SS).

Green business practices, like turning off lights, recycling, carpooling, composting, serving organic and local foods and encouraging use of reusable cups/bags/plates, reduce waste, save energy and can save businesses money, improve the local and global community and economy, and benefit the environment. Now in its third year, the award program continues to encourage businesses by providing businesses a list of useful, easy, locally-proven business practices to save energy, money and resources. The program's four levels recognize different levels of commitment towards green practices. The more actions that a business is doing to help the environment, the higher the recognition level they receive. The special recognition category was set up for a business or group involved in a one-time, major environmental initiative.

Troll’s fish, fossils depict science in funky art

In 2008 Southeast Alaskan artist Ray Troll was awarded an honorary doctorate in fine arts from the University of Alaska Southeast.

by Naomi Klouda, Homer Tribune

Alaska is a fish culture, or more specifically, a salmon culture based on the drama of the runs as species of salmon go on epic sea journeys from fresh water to salt water and back again.

They begin another epic journey as their “flesh falls off their bodies, males get all spawned out, their snout changes and their bones transform until they become these monsters,” Ray Troll told his packed audience Friday night at the Friends of the Homer Library annual fundraising event honoring Lifelong Learning.
The best-selling “Spawn Till You Die” T-shirt designed by Troll depicts some of that culture’s fascination with the transformation.

Troll was the featured speaker, packing in the largest crowd the event has seen in recent years. His slide show presentation was part biography as he showed the audience photos of the eight-member Troll family from the early 1960s as they moved 11 places during his father’s U.S. Air Force tours of duty. It was part stand-up comedy with a serious twist. Troll’s work illustrating fish is described as bringing a street-smart sensibility to the worlds of ichthyology and paleontology: One-liners he transfers to t-shirts and large scale art, taking it outside the realm of droll textbooks.

Like his own evolution, described as starting from age four when he picked up his first crayon, to today, doing illustrations for the day’s most prestigious museums and scientists, homo sapiens experienced their own evolution. Beginning as a weird lobe-fin fish.

Photographer waits, watches for perfect light on Mount McKinley | Anchorage Daily News - The News Tribune

Full article: Photographer waits, watches for perfect light on Mount McKinley | Anchorage Daily News - The News Tribune.  Excerpt from Anchorage Daily News article:

For the past dozen or so years, Matsumoto has camped on glaciers in the Alaska Range in the dead of winter for more than a month at a time -- seeking the perfect photograph of northern lights on Denali, but also something more intangible: the chance for an encounter with the natural world that will make him feel "very small."  View 5 of his beautiful photos here: http://www.adn.com/2012/02/18/2325078/norio-matsumoto.html

In a bookstore at the college where he studied industrial sociology, he stumbled on a book by the famous Japanese nature photographer Michio Hoshino. The photos and stories were of Alaska: caribou in the Arctic, whales in Southeast, tiny details of lichen and vast mountain ranges.

Hoshino was known in Alaska and Japan not only for his photos but for his gentle nature and knack for developing deep friendships. He was killed by a brown bear in Russia in 1996.

Matsumoto knew he wanted to find what Hoshino had found in Alaska, "to be out in the wilderness, camp for a long time and feel the things that he had felt."

So he quit his Japanese college and moved to Fairbanks to attend the University of Alaska. He was shocked by the cold and harsh winters. He moved to Juneau, where he earned a degree from the University of Alaska Southeast. He liked the feeling of a place teeming with rich, mossy life and the way the mountains and ocean met.

UAS mining simulator aims to stimulate Southeast students

 By Libby Stringer |

JUNEAU - Imagine the pressure of operating a piece of heavy underground mining equipment for the first time. One false move could potentially cause injury, equipment down time and thousands of dollars in damage, not to mention shattered pride and a lost job.

Thanks to a new state-of-the-art simulator recently acquired by the University of Alaska Southeast, prospective miners can virtually test drive an Atlas Copco Boltec MC bolting rig, an Atlas Copco ST14 mucker or a Sandvik TORO 40D haul truck, all with the security of a restart button.

The TORO simulator was utilized during a show and tell with U.S. Sen. Mark Begich at the UAS Technical Education Center on March 4. With the guidance of UAS Center for Mine Training coaches, Begich drove a loaded TORO along the virtual mine's main haulage, successfully dumping his ore load at the virtual crusher.

Upon completion, Begich received a printout containing an evaluation of his performance. Were he a student enrolled in the mine training program, the printout would go in his file for long-term progress tracking.  Continue reading full article at capitalcityweekly.com here.
